Oral hygiene tips from your Lawrence dentist

A family is holding toothbrushes.

Your health affects every aspect of your life, every single day. Yet, many people don’t think about it on a daily basis. Healthy living and good habits are essential for your oral and overall health. Here are a few simple ways you can protect your beautiful smile and radiant health.

Brush and floss

You probably know that one of the fastest ways to get sick is not washing your hands, or not taking the time to wash them right. We can’t always avoid toxins, bacteria, and viruses in the world around us, but we can remove them before they harm our health. Similarly, bacteria are always present in your mouth, and plaque is always forming. If you don’t take the time to clean your mouth well, that bacteria will multiply, attach to tooth enamel, and infect gum tissue.

Health food for teeth

A healthy diet is good for your body, and your mouth is part of that body. Eating better, and improving your overall health, will always benefit your dental health. However, a few foods are especially good for dental health.

Vegetables are the best source of most essential vitamins, which your entire body needs. Raw, crunchy ones such as celery have the added benefit of cleaning your teeth while you eat.

Green tea and other high-antioxidant foods or beverages have been shown to bolster the immune system, helping to prevent infection. This includes periodontal disease, which is an infection of the gum tissue.

Water is one of the most basic substances we consume. It keeps the tissues in your mouth hydrated, and rinse bacteria and food debris from the teeth. Unfortunately, many people bypass pure water in favor of sugary or acidic beverages such as soda and energy drinks.

These are just a few of the ways you can promote good oral health in your daily life. When you visit us for a check-up, an important part of that appointment is a consultation. We will arm you with the information that you need to keep your smile beautiful and healthy! Call (888) 993-1707 to schedule an appointment today.
